We've only been in Virginia three months and have already had numerous adventures. I'll try to catch up on some of them in the coming weeks. But for now, I'll start with yesterday's journey to Chimney Top Cemetery in Greene County, Tennessee.
Armed with water bottles and little else, we took the trusty Jeep and headed out in search of long-gone Penleys. We stopped off at the trailer of cousins Bea and Charlie, the last bastion of civilization before the climb up the mountain, for final directions, and just to let someone know we were up there! Charlie warned us to look out for snakes, as it's the season for them to "get together." Usually, he said, if you see one, another is not far away.
The road was not bad considering there shouldn't have been a road there at all really. It was washed out in deep gullies in many places. Big rocks jutted up. A small tree had fallen across it in one place. Several times we had to get out (watching for rattlers!) and look over the road ahead to pick the best track.
But nothing stops Tom, and eventually we made it all the way to the top.

Cindy,my parents,Maggie and Simon F Forbes, also lived on Chimney Top,where the Beacon light, was built on their property.
Three of my brothers,Garland,Harvey and Lewis, along with my sister,Betty were born,on the Chimney Top.
That must have been where,Jenny met John Penley, for she lived there too.
Also my Uncle Harrison, and his family lived there, too.
My daughter,Carol, now owns the property. There is no road up there to where the house was.
I loved your blog, and you are a wonderful writer in it.
